I: We’ve seen exactly what she [Cris de Diego] can see, which is a blur, it’s difficult to differentiate colours even… How could you teach a blind person to draw? This is a very interesting exhibition.
RR: Well, indeed. I remember perfectly the first time that she came to class, accompanied by a janitor, and I saw her with her white cane. I was shocked, and thought: “Oh, my! How are we going to teach a blind person?” But the truth is that she makes it look so easy. We tried different materials, cork, tacks, until I came up with the idea of using play dough. And she’s incredibly intelligent, and a really good listener too, a quality that not everybody has. When one has a disability, when one is visually impaired, they usually develop their other senses more. So, she listens very carefully and pays especial attention to lectures.
I: So, what are you presenting here? What kind of artworks, drawings, and how many of them?
CdD: I don’t know how many, thirty-four or forty, maybe. I can’t tell because we’re still setting everything up, and we don’t know yet. These are the art projects I did last year during the first course of Fine Arts and Tourism. There’s a little bit of everything, as you’ll see. At the beginning I did a lot of still life, and then portraits, and expressionist drawings… I express my feelings with my fingers and play dough.
RR: She has a passion, a drive to keep improving herself, nothing is too much for her. She’s always like, “come on, Ruth, let’s try to draw a body, let’s try – anything.” I wanted to take it slow so she wouldn’t get frustrated, and she would enjoy the process but she, on the contrary, she wanted more, more challenges, a portrait, a portrait of Bruce Springsteen… She’s so inspiring, that’s why I strongly recommend this exhibition, especially to young people, teenagers, so that they come and see that everything is possible if they really want it. No challenge is too big.

Why and how I started painting in 2017 ? / ¿Por qué y cómo empecé a pintar en 2017?

I received the Extraordinary Award at the end of my Tourism Degree course for the best student (average note of record: Outstanding 9.04/10). However, I realized there were very few paintings accessible to blind visitors in the museums I visited while I was studing Tourism. I consider that a visually impaired person needs minimal means of support to perceive, by using the other senses, the aesthetics of a work of art and to create a mental image of it. So, I started my studies in a Double Degree in Fine Arts and Tourism in 2017. My Drawing professor, Ruth Remartínez, gave me the tools I needed to paint and I started painting in 2017. Despite being blind, I got Merit of Honor in subjects like Painting or Aethetics. My professors and classmates told me that I had my own style. None of them were visually impaired people.

Turismo me di cuenta de que había muy pocas pinturas accesibles a los visitantes ciegos en los museos que visitaba. Considero que, una persona con discapacidad visual necesita unos medios de apoyo mínimos para percibir, usando los otros sentidos, la estética de una obra de arte y crear su imagen mental de la misma. Por ello, en 2017, inicié los estudios del Doble Grado en Bellas Artes y Turismo. Mi profesora de Dibujo, Ruth Remartínez, me dió las herramientas que necesitaba y empecé a pintar en 2017. A pesar de mi ceguera, obtuve Matrícula de Honor en las asignaturas de Pintura y de Estética. Mis profesores y mis compañeros de clase me decían que yo tenía un estilo propio.
Ninguno de ellos tenía discapacidad visual.

My exhibition «Drawing in Blindness» took place at El Vivero Cultural Center of Madrid from March 1 to 15, 2019. Previously, I had to refuse several invitations to make an exhibition because the places they offrered me were not accessible at all. I chose El Vivero because its facilities are accessible to everyone including people in a wheelchair.

Previamente, tuve que rechazar invitaciones para exponer porque los lugares que me ofrecían no eran nada accesibles. Elegí El Vivero porque sus instalaciones son accesibles para todos, incluidas las personas en silla de ruedas.

My target is everyone interested in visiting a painting exhibition. As you can see from my exhibition pictures, there were visitors from all ages. 5% of them were visually impaired people. 95% of the visitors were no visually impaired people but half of them wanted to perceive the aesthetics of some paintings by touching its reproduction in a tactile relief , following and order scan and listening to its audio description.

Mi público objetivo es cualquier persona interesada en visitar una exposición de pintura. Como pueden ver en las fotos de mi exposición, hubo visitantes de todas las edades. Solo el 5 % de ellos, fueron visitantes con discapacidad visual. El 95 % de los visitantes fueron personas sin discapacidad visual si bien, la mitad de ellos quisieron percibir la estética de algunas pinturas tocando un relieve táctil de las mismas y siguiendo una exploración táctil y dirigida mientras escuchaban su audio descripción.
How a blind person can perceive my paintings / Cómo puede una persona ciega percibir mis pinturas

As you can see from my exhibition photographs, a person who can not see needs minimal means of support to perceive, by using the other senses, the aesthetics of a painting and to create a mental image of it. A blind person needs to: touch its reproduction in relief, follow an ordered scan and listen to its description.

Como pueden ver en las fotos de mi exposición, una persona que no puede ver necesita unos medios de apoyo mínimos para percibir, usando los otros sentidos, la estética de mis pinturas y crearse su imagen mental de las mismas. Una persona ciega necesita: tocar su reproducción en relieve, siguiendo una exploración dirigida, al tiempo que escucha la descripción de las imágenes que la componen.
